ASD & ADHD Screening Tools
ASD Screening Tools
For individuals with ASD, navigating the workplace can present its own set of challenges. Many adults with ASD may have gone undiagnosed or misdiagnosed in their formative years, leading to difficulties in understanding their own strengths and weaknesses. As a result, they may face challenges in finding and maintaining employment, building relationships with colleagues, and adapting to change.
ASD Screening Tools
Ritvo Autism & Asperger Diagnostic Scale (RAADS-14)
Higher emphasis on internal experiences than outward behaviors. Effective for distinguishing Autism from other conditions that may be confused for autism (Bipolar, PTSD, Social Anxiety).
Scoring: 14 and above out of 42 indicate possible Asperger’s.
Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) Test
The most common screener for Autism. Based on 50 questions. The score is based on the number of Autistic traits.
- Created for autistic adults without co-occurring intellectual disabilities.
- Less effective at screening those with highly developed masking skills and autistic individuals who are extroverted and/or imaginative.
- Scoring:
- A result of 26 or higher (50 points total) indicates the possibility of Asperger’s
- 80% of autistic people score 32 or higher
- Most non-autistic males score 17 on average
- Most non-autistic females score 15 on average
Empathy Quotient (EQ) Test
This 60-item questionnaire is designed to measure empathy in adults.
- A result of 30 or below indicates the possibility of Asperger’s
- 81% of people previously designated Asperger syndrome score 30 or lower
- Most non-autistic males score 42 on average
- Most non-autistic females score 47 on average
Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ)
The original ASSQ consists of 27 items for a maximum score of 54 points.
- The higher the point total, the greater the likelihood that you show signs of autism spectrum disorder.
- A score of 51 or higher on the ASSQ indicates the possibility of ASD, and further assessment is recommended.
Modified Girls Questionnaire for Autism Spectrum Condition (GQ-ASC) – Scale for Adult Women
This screening questionnaire is designed to identify behaviors and abilities in women associated with autism.
- A score greater than 56 indicates a high level of autistic traits, sensitive to 80% of cases.
Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q)
The CAT-Q measures Autistic camouflaging (masking, social compensation, and assimilation).
- Identifies Autistic individuals who do not meet diagnostic criteria for autism on other tests due to masking autistic traits.
Risk: Factors other than Autism may cause a person to have a high masking score; therefore, CAT-Q may have a higher rate of false positives.
ADHD Screening Tools
As an executive coach, I frequently encounter Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD affects approximately 11% of children and 4% of adults in the United States, making it one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders.
While many people may associate ADHD with hyperactive children who struggle to focus in school, it is essential to recognize that it can also affect adults in their personal and professional lives. Many executives and entrepreneurs may not even realize they have ADHD until later in life when its symptoms begin impacting their performance.
One way to identify potential signs of ADHD is by using screening tools. These tools are designed to assess behaviors and patterns that may be indicative of ADHD, such as difficulty with organization, time management, and impulsivity. However, it is essential to note that a formal diagnosis can only be made by a trained professional.
ADHD Screeners
PsychCentral ADHD Online Assessment
This screening questionnaire is designed to identify behaviors and symptoms associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults. It is not a diagnostic tool but rather an initial assessment to determine if further evaluation by a qualified professional may be necessary.
- A score greater than 15 indicates a high likelihood of having ADHD.
Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRSv1.1)
An 18-item questionnaire was designed to assess criteria for both ADHD inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.
- A score below 14 does not rule out ADHD.
ADHD in Women Symptom Test
This test is specifically designed for adult women and includes questions about common manifestations of ADHD in females, such as difficulty with time management and organization.
- A score above 14 may indicate a potential diagnosis of ADHD in women.
ADD Symptom Test for Adults
Focus on Inattentive ADHD, not hyperactivity
- If you score 45-60, that means you answered “Often” or “Very Often” to most of the questions and should pursue a formal diagnosis as there is a possibility that you may be experiencing symptoms of Inattentive ADHD.
The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11)
This assessment is used to measure impulsivity in adults. It includes questions about your ability to control impulses, focus on tasks, and make rash decisions.
- A score above 70 may indicate a diagnosis of ADHD.
Adult Repetitive Behaviors Questionnaire-2 (RBQ-2A)
This questionnaire assesses repetitive behaviors in adults, such as fidgeting, tapping, or pacing. It includes questions about the frequency and intensity of these behaviors.
- A higher score on this assessment may suggest a diagnosis of ADHD.
